Graduate schools in the Unranked category do not receive numerical
rankings from U.S. News.
The University of Wisconsin—Madison's engineering school recently
advised U.S. News that it misreported data that were used in the 2017 Best
Graduate Schools rankings, released earlier this month.
The misreported data resulted in the school's numerical rank being
higher than it otherwise might have been in the Best Engineering Schools
rankings for 2017. The school had tied for No. 14.
Because of the discrepancy, U.S. News has moved the University of
Wisconsin—Madison to the "Unranked" category on usnews.com. Schools
in the Unranked category do not receive numerical rankings from U.S. News. The
"Best Graduate Schools 2017" print guidebook will not be updated.
The school's Unranked status will last until the publication of the
next edition of the Best Engineering Schools rankings and until the University
of Wisconsin—Madison confirms the accuracy of its next data submission in
accordance with U.S. News' requirements.
We have noted this Unranked status on the University of
Wisconsin—Madison's profile page, and we have included the corrected data that
the school provided on usnews.com and in the U.S. News Graduate School Compass
tool.
The University of Wisconsin—Madison advised U.S. News that it
submitted an incorrect number of applications, number of acceptances and, as a
result, an incorrect acceptance rate for its fall 2015 entering class into its
master's and doctoral programs.
The school told U.S. News that its correct number of applications
was 6,172; it originally reported the number as 9,338. It told U.S. News that
the correct number of acceptances was 1,154; it originally reported the number
as 833. The school also told U.S.
News that its correct acceptance rate for its
fall 2015 entering class into its master's and doctoral programs was 18.7
percent, not the 8.9 percent originally reported.
A school's acceptance rate was used in the overall 2017 Best
Engineering Schools rankings methodology.
The acceptance rate was weighted at
3.25 percent of the ranking formula.
The University of Wisconsin—Madison's specialty rankings in areas
such as chemical engineering and nuclear engineering are based on a separate
methodology and will not change.
U.S. News will continue to handle each case of data misreporting on
an individual basis.
